Abandoned: Glenn Dale Hospital and Sanatorium

I hadn't gone on an abandoned adventure in a while so I decided to do some research. I found various places in Virginia but had trouble finding exact addresses. I came across a hospital in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Other bloggers had written about their experience roaming the old hospital grounds. I read multiple posts telling readers not to go to Glenn Dale and that the hospital is constantly patrolled by police. That frightened me a bit but I figured with all the greenery surrounding the grounds, it wouldn't be too hard to hide myself. I did some more research about the hospital's history.

In 1930 when tuberculosis was fatal, D.C. built Glenn Dale Sanatorium, one of the largest TB hospitals in the country. It continued as only a TB facility through the '50s until antibiotics changed the treatment of TB. From the '60s through 1982, when it closed, the hospital admitted patients with other illnesses. Today about 15 buildings remain. Bids were made on the property but they were rejected. In 2014, Preservation Maryland placed the hospital on its list of threatened historic properties.

Driving down Glenn Dale road, you can see a huge hospital building. I was surprised at how visible it all was. My friend and I found a parking spot near a park and decided to walk through long grass to get to the hospital grounds. The first picture I posted is what we first came across. We didn't make it to every building but got to explore various small buildings as well as one that seemed endless with hallways. I was surprised to not find any old hospital beds or medical supplies still lying around. The rusting buildings were covered with vines. Trees were growing through the broken glass windows. Dust covered the floors and graffiti covered the walls.
I could definitely use another visit.
